Into the town of Hamelin comes a quaintly dressed stranger who calls himself the Pied Piper. For the sum of a thousand guilders he agrees to rid the town of rats, with which it has been over-run. He plays on his pipe, the rats follow to their doom into the river Weser, the townspeople rejoice - but then neglect to keep their agreement about the thousand guilders. The Piper's revenge begins when he pipes three 'sweet soft notes as yet musician's cunning never gave the enraptured air', and all the children of Hamelin start to follow
